MFL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Teachers on the project had opportunities to work collaboratively on Project Days at the university and in the school setting.

Opportunities for mutual observation or supporting colleagues in the ICT room were taken in some schools. Sometimes a teacher and researcher worked together on a one-to-one basis.

Research on Teaching and Learning

The work of teachers in the project provided a focus for reflecting on the teaching and learning of modern foreign languages. These are some of the questions we have raised and considered in the team.

  • Does ‘scaffolding’ (support in the form of choices in text boxes) aid accuracy with all pupils, or is it more effective with pupils of certain levels of attainment?
  • Does an audience? whether in the form of the public domain through a school web site or specific pupils in a school abroad? motivate pupils to communicate, to be more fluent or accurate in their work?
  • What are pupils’ views on the benefits of ICT as a tool to help them in their learning of French or German?

What one teacher said about her subject design initiative:

The most exciting thing for me was seeing that this could be transferred to other subject areas.

I really feel I've learnt something and I feel the students have benefited. It's something I'd like to take further because I think it's very exciting still ? it's not just a one-off project, it's really opened my eyes to learn about learning
